There are two distinctive, yet complimentary disciplines required for a successful newspaper. The editorial side with the editors and journalists saying that without us there would not be a newspaper. Alongside that the management, who say that without advertisers, subscribers and funding there would not be a newspaper. Both statements are true. But what is equally true is regardless of how gifted a person is, particularly in the rigorous discipline of producing a weekly newspaper, they cannot successfully wear both hats at the same time.
Challenge is a wonderful faith-building environment. On the editorial side, alongside the regular features, seeing the news unfold during the week with a common thread woven through it continues to amaze us. We see it as a tribute to God and the readers who pray for us. On the business side, that we have survived 69 years, has also been a miracle. But in recent times, in doing so, we have stretched to the limit the patience of our suppliers and the trusts that have supported us.
Over the past eight years we have not found a person, committed to managing the paper and accepting responsibility for finance. Events of the past few weeks have made it abundantly clear that without such an appointment it is imprudent for Challenge to continue to operate.
The shortfall each week would be covered by two or three good sized adverts. Then there is the potential of supplements as they give a reason for advertising which is evident in this week’s issue. The next Challenge will again include a supplement, an issue that will be distributed to 1500 homes in the Wellsford area.
There is a strange nervousness in the office. On one hand we fully realise that after the next issue Challenge may go into recess. That staff may need to look for other work and that the infrastructure of Challenge may no longer be needed. The realisation that the job God has had for Challenge may have been completed. If that is so we have no regrets.
Alongside that there is an anticipation, can I say almost an excitement, recognising that God can take the situation we face as a reality test to equip and prepare Challenge for all he wants it to do. A trumpet declaring to our nation with certain sound that Jesus reigns supreme.
Our desire is a clear confirmation that Challenge is still needed in our nation and the assurance that if it is, God will provide the staff, the resources and the funding that we need. We fully recognise that to follow Christ faithfully is not an easy ride, but rather demands obedience and faith. To that we are committed.
