In every family, birthdays are very special occasions and for the Christian family it is no exception.
Birthdays remind us of that special moment when a new life is unveiled to the world — the pride of every family. For me, whether it is a child, a grandchild or a great-grandchild, the wonder is the same. As I take that little bundle into my arms the reality of a creator God dawns on me afresh. The lyric expresses it like this, “Every time I hear a newborn baby cry, touch a leaf or see the sky, I know why I believe”.
Yes, welcoming a baby into a home is a wonderful moment, one that changes the whole dynamic of living. It brings purpose and responsibility to marriage and transforms a house into a home. A birthday is certainly a time of celebration.
For the Christian family, Christmas is an extra-special time to celebrate. We reflect on that astonishing moment; a baby born in a stable and laid in a manger. The press release, brought in grand style by a great crowd of angels, declared to the shepherds the ‘news of the world’. The statement: “(This is) the most joyful news ever announced, and it is for everyone. The Saviour, yes the Messiah, the Lord – has been born tonight in Bethlehem. You will find a baby wrapped in a blanket, lying in a manger”.
A little bundle of joy that turned not only his family, but the world upside down.
Now 2000 years later, our nation declares a public holiday to mark that extraordinary day. Families come together, cards and greetings are sent, presents are given and a spirit of goodwill envelops us all. The miracle of that moment when Jesus was ushered into our dirty, grubby world is not forgotten. Even on the far side of the world we celebrate his birthday.
Jesus, I think about gifts to give this Christmas. I wonder if there is a present you would like me to give you? Bit of a tough assignment finding something you need and would appreciate. Something that you don’t already have. Something uniquely Kiwi. But as I think about it the jigsaw is fitting together. You were born so I could be welcomed in your family. So this Christmas I bring myself to you as a present that you can accept.
