CS Lewis fans will find something familiar in Colin Duriez’s A Field Guide To Narnia.
Duriez, who authored the now out of print The C S Lewis Encyclopedia, shows off just how much he knows about the 20th century’s greatest apologist for the Christian faith, some of the many influences that went into the seven Chronicles of Narnia, and explains just how Lewis’ friend JRR Tolkien, a devout Catholic, fits into Narnia lore.
Duriez explains, through copious notes and references, that Lewis did not intend to write an allegory of the Gospels, as some Christians have claimed, but instead supposed what form God might take if he chose to visit a fantasy world such a Narnia – the lion Aslan.
Brian Sibley, himself a foremost expert on the writings of Lewis, says in his foreword: “One could not wish for a better travelling companion than a pre-eminent commentator such as Colin Duriez.”
A fascinating read for one who recently re-read the two chronicles.
